Choosing to focus on a cup half full we are mighty grateful for the big day we had on Sunday; because we didn't catch anything today. My goodness! talk about a fall from grace. Excellent conditions, not much different than the previous day, and the same overall sign of fish in the early morning, instilled plenty of confidence about good things to come. As the morning progressed however the “feel” of the place began to change. It wasn't right, we knew it, but clung to optimism regardless. The classic old fisherman's habit of rationalizing everything wrong with the picture kicked in at about 0900, and lasted through about 1330 when we finally, begrudgingly succumbed to the sad reality that we were doomed.
Whatever we thought was good about the conditions obviously didn't square with the tuna's motives. Pretty darn classic really; no surprise to any of us either. The fact that I always leave wiggle room in my forecasts about the next day, week, month, and/or year probably does not go unnoticed. I've been party to these “Crazy Ivan's” too many times to not know better. In the end we finished up our fishing striving for even a taste of what yesterday had to offer, and didn't get it. Aside from a few nice tuna, only one of which met the size standards established the day before, we squeezed in a handful of wahoo on a closing note and got out of Dodge. What's done is done.
We depart with a beautiful load of fish though. Premium RSW tanks loaded with the finest sashimi grade yellowfin tuna, and a nice distribution of fresh wahoo, definitively identify this voyage as a fishing success. Every one of the fifteen anglers on board thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to pull on, and take home, as many of these beautiful giant yellowfin tuna as they can handle.
Photo today features age old Royal Star veteran, friend, and master angler Warren Sakamoto in a beautiful shot with his 197 coming over the rail. Missing this voyage last season due to a reef fishing mishap we are unspeakably pleased to be sharing time at the rail with Warren again.
If you would like to go fishing with us please BOOK ONLINE or call (619) 224-4764 to get in on the action.
