Fantastic Day

Definitely the day we have been waiting for, in particular the afternoon. Steady catching on nigh straight 170 – 197 pound yellowfin with a couple of low two's in the mix; an absolutely incredible grade of fish that came over the rail consistently from lunch time through the late afternoon. The beautiful sardines that I crowed about as we departed San Diego were the difference. A single fish fell victim to the chunk; everything else came on the Everingham Bait Co. sardines. Between the catching, fantastic weather, and epic surface showing by these fired up jumbos – nothing like 170 through 190's flying out of the water and carving jacuzzi size boils right next to the boat to maintain enthusiasm for the cause, this day will be fondly recalled by all of us for a long time to come.
Perhaps the best part of all, time will tell, is that we have one more day to fish in this incredibly productive zone. Seeing how every day has been different thus far we're not going to start counting our chickens yet, too many times have we been acquainted with our relevance to make that error. But we are certainly ready for the chance should it manifest. We've got room in the primo RSW tank for plenty more.
Photo today features long time Royal Star angler and valued friend Jan Abbott. The capture of her late afternoon 204 on the fly lined sardine and 130# fluorocarbon was no surprise to us – seems like she always gets her man (just ask Floyd!) I'm kidding of course (not about Floyd), Jan is a superb angler and stellar individual to share the rail and off time with on board Royal Star. A veteran of so many voyages that she could probably submit enough sea time to qualify for a Captain's exam Jan knows the inside and out of Long Range fishing; she never hesitates to lighten the atmosphere with a kind gesture or word.
