Final Morning

The final morning, so highly touted and prepared for, ended in a big fizzle. Terrible fishing conditions overtook the hallowed grounds about midnight and, contrary to the previous six mornings, never straightened out. The weather was good, we had that going for us, but the fishing didn't happen. Moving into the full moon cycle I can't report such a change as surprising; along with the bigger tides one can typically expect some kind of change to occur. From the grounds late in the day did come reports of success; both on jumbos over 200 pounds and the “stock” 90 -120's. To no one's surprise they were still around; just not in the morning down where we were. We capped off the fishing portion of the voyage with a couple of go around's on skinnies that provided a well received farewell to the fortunate few who won their skirmishes. Even those that didn't took it in stride and enjoyed the always colorful wahoo show. That final taste, if nothing else, did wonders to plant the seed for next time. And a beautiful catch of quantity and quality in the hatch removed any sense of defeat as we bid the area farewell in the late morning. Well received were blissfully calm sea conditions as we headed northwest prepared to endure the inevitable bumps and jumps associated with uphill travel. This time though it appears that we drew the lucky hand. Flat calm for the next two and a half days, aside from a lengthy rise and fall over the mammoth northwest groundswells, promises relaxation and comfort as anglers soak in their recent triumphs and make preparations already for this run next year. Photo today features long time Royal Star friend and veteran Jim Marshall who snagged this nice skin during a quick foray two days prior. On a closing note I just spoke with Tracy confirming that we do still have a couple of spots available on the 15/12 day voyage departing on February 12th returning to Cabo on the 24th. The San Diego return day will be February 27th. This is a fantastic group of anglers who make an incredibly good time of their annual “Las Rocas” big fish run welcoming any and all to join in the fun. If you can make it give Tracy a call in the office. If you need someone to help talk you into it, or seek permission from your better half, Brian and I are happy to call direct from out here!

If you would like to go fishing with us please BOOK ONLINE or call (619) 224-4764 to get in on the action.
