This morning we started fishing early in the dark as usual and initially it was all skipjack and at least one very pesky shark. As he’s done several times this trip Tom Neuman started us off by landing a nice tuna on one of the skippies, his first skipjack bait fish ever. Once he got the ball rolling we got into an excellent bite of the nicest grade tuna we’ve seen yet. Most of the morning fish were at least 130 to180 with one very noticeable exception. Bob Ramirez struck gold with a 260 which is by far our best bait caught fish and for that matter the biggest of any tuna we’ve landed thus far. It was a very tough fish and Bob, who you’d have to say is a tackle expert, says by the look of his line and leader afterwards, it was a small miracle it all stayed intact enough to finish off the monster. It was clearly our best morning bite of the trip which was a good thing because the rest of the day an uncooperative current made it extremely difficult to get bait out and fishing was challenging at best with only a few more landed for the day kite and bait producing equally. Also worth mentioning, just before dinner John Halcrow hooked and released a marlin. It was not the first one we’ve released on this trip, and not particularly uncommon to hook them out here, but no one had ever seen one bite a PL68 tuna jig before. Once again it was another fun filled day of fishing with our weather still fully cooperating. Tomorrow the RSW well opens for business as the frozen well is packed to capacity. Bob wanted a shout out to Susie and he certainly deserves it. For that matter Susie deserves it too, and I want to add my own hello to her and hope she has a speedy recovery and will be fishing with us again soon. She has and continues to be the biggest fan of my reports and poems and I thank her sincerely for her encouragement.
