We had an excellent day of fishing today. Combine that with fabulous weather and even better food, and life just doesn’t get a whole lot better! It all started around 3:30 this morning and nothing really happened for a couple of hours. But…. Once they found us, we had fish going all day long both on kite and on bait. The tuna were in two classes, the majority of the fish in the 60 to 80 range, and the other class was 100 to 150. We didn’t stop there though, the biggest fish came off the kite and there were two cows in the mix. Keith Patterson landed the largest of the trip so far, a 210, and Nick Didovic was just behind him with a very tough 207 which initially looked like it would need a back up rod, but stopped short of spooling him. It fought every inch of the way to the boat. I can’t imagine that any one didn’t hook and land at least one or more tuna in one of the afore mentioned size classes today. Even Alex, ½ of the all-star galley chef’s team had a few minutes of down time, threw out a bait, and not only landed his personal best, but had a two for one while doing it. He hooked a tuna around 160 pounds that apparently had broken off another boat’s kite because it brought with it a ball of spectra and some of the terminal tackle. If that wasn’t cool enough, a smaller (around 90 pound ) tuna got wrapped up in the line and Alex brought them both in at the same time. Normally passengers donate fish to the galley for future meals, but Alex single handedly guaranteed us enough tuna for the rest of the trip. In addition to non-stop tuna action, a handful of wahoo also found their way into the freezer by the end of the day. Wind totally laid down for us today, and a nice cloud cover kept us feeling comfortable despite battling fish all day. Really, what else could you ask for? Many days to go and still lots of room for bigger fish which we are absolutely certain are out there swimming around. We will make more kite bait tonight, and repeat all of the above tomorrow.

Almost There Today should be our last day of total relaxation as we are slated to be on the tuna grounds around 7 tomorrow morning. Four days into the trip and finally all the reels are on rods, all the top shots are on reels, and hooks are on the top shots ready for battle. I always find it amazing that most angler’s fishing trips would probably be over by now and we have yet to really start. Let’s...... Read More
