A successful, abbreviated morning endeavor that led to an afternoon offshore that didn't go near as well. Another looooong attempt to find something, anything floating that produced the sum total of one old bucket, one six foot piece of old polypropelene line, and one small circle of kelp leaves at best 16 inches in diameter. Aside from a few runs down the coast this has been a theme all too familiar this 2015 offshore season. When you find one out west it's usually good, but doing so has proven extraordinarily difficult, consistently. I will say that lately there has been an uptick in the number of kelps found. Because of this my confidence about getting the job done and fulfilling the dorado expectation was running high. This only proves, again, that this ocean is so capable of serving up anything, any time, on both sides of the spectrum. In the end we took the slight in stride; it was by choice that we removed ourselves from the land of plenty in search of alternative species. Around here we adhere to the philosophy that “enough” fish is a variable quantity always dictated by common sense – not necessarily “limits”. And we do have enough beautiful, 50 – 130 pound class yellowfin tuna. Our final morning will be passed in pursuit of a few yellowtail and variety species coastal before heading up the line to make our scheduled Friday morning early arrival. Photo today features a draw from the opening leg of the trip. First time Royal Star angler, but no stranger to a rod and reel and long range fishing Charles West, handily subdued a few of these beauties during this voyage. One final admin note: Tracy informed me that we have one space that just became available on the five day voyage departing tomorrow. This voyage will feature a run to the famous, long sought, Isla Guadalupe. Fishing at the behemoth offshore legend has been off the charts of late. If any anglers out there have the time to make a snap decision and jump on this trip I strongly encourage them to do so. It may very well be the chance of a life time. I'll draft more about the Isla Guadalupe opportunity and post later. It is with the highest respect, appreciation, and environmental stewardship that we must proceed if we are to see this incredible opportunity continue. To all whom have booked on upcoming voyages featuring the opportunity to visit Isla Guadalupe take note: the future of fishing at that island rests in our ability to demonstrate that we as individuals, and a fishery, have evolved.
