A full, long, satisfying day of scratch fishing for wahoo and exotics stationary in calm conditions. Though the numbers don't exactly relate a tale of tall success the real caliber of wahoo fishing, as so many have discovered this and last year especially, often can not be determined by numbers, or the size of the pile, alone. Between the bite off's, leader's failing, line snapping, fish racing under the boat, and any and every other fishing calamity one can, and can't, begin to imagine, the rate of escape in this style of fishing simply defy's reason. And that's not just here on Royal Star. Across the board this is standard fare when targeting wahoo using both jigs (casting lures) and live bait. If I have one piece of advice for anglers on upcoming fall voyages it is to stock up on wire. If this kind of fishing keeps up you are going to need it.
Otherwise we reached the end of our southern string opting for a northerly trek in search of what we may find. It appears right now that the miles north will be earned the old fashioned way, but that's nothing we aren't well prepared for. A little bumping and jumping is all then by Wednesday, and throughout next week, she's comes right back down to the realm of civil. Photos today feature Blake and Brian Magnuson with a fine “skin” picked off on the troll, and Captain Brian Sims and Mark Berklite with a wily one fooled on the live bait and 40# wire.
