An uneventful day of travel north slogging through the slop in fine fashion. Looking out the window one would have thought that we were in for a good drubbing. But in no hurry we eased through the troughs with little more than an occasional bump coming over the top. All good; and inevitable northerly miles gained adding a couple more days of fish wrangling to our itinerary.
Photo today features an agony of defeat moment worth sharing. Veteran angler Steve Holmes, a former Captain himself back in the day and undisputed master fisherman, was subjected to the wahoo run around yesterday in the worst kind of way. No matter what Steve did the results were identical – a hooked speed devil lost to any number of disasters. Then, finally, everything went right. The hooked fish went out away from the boat, no additional lines joined the fight – a clean battle right up to the last minute. Then, unexpectedly, the fish simply gave up. No last hurrah, no head shaking or darting under the boat, of a sudden it just became smooth and easy to wind right in. The damage done to the fish (what's left of it) in the photo was far less than was done to Steve's ego. This was the last straw. This was the culmination of about ten failed attempts; luck definitely favoring the wrong direction.
In the end, a while after this tragic outcome, Steve finally did prevail; nothing to do on these occasions other than tie another hook or jig on. Also, in such circumstances, a little humor, if one can muster any, goes a long way. At one time or another it happens to all of us. In the photo we figured that Steve gaffing the remnants of his once beautiful wahoo was appropriate. In doing so he looked like an old pro; and shared a good laugh with everyone who saw.
