08/20/15 A long day of looking interspersed with opportunities at 20 – 30 pound class yellowfin tuna. Today definitely qualified as an “off” day overall as seeing fish was not the problem; seeing fish that wanted to bite was. It's a familiar story; one that we are far too familiar with this year. There were a few spots in the mix that wanted to go, fortunately we were among the middle of the road bunch that were able to capitalize at least a little on what we found. But the big hit, of which there were a limited few, was not in our destiny. Maybe tomorrow. Knowing that the potential is out there is an important part of the equation; it supports the enthusiasm and optimism necessary to weather those days when the finicky bastards test everyone's patience. And no matter what occurs tomorrow, or the next day, or the next, we will have our chance again; eventually they will drop their guard. And when that chance comes rest assured that these not biting son's of bitches are going to pay a dear price; it's going to take a lot of them in the hatch to quench this building thirst for vengeance. Of course we are pining high hopes that that day will be tomorrow. In every respect we are well prepared. Abundant, perfect bait, plenty of time, and excellent weather are a solid foundation to work from. The ball is in their court now. Photo today features long time Royal Star veteran Tom Yeager with a school size yellowfin that succumbed to the lure fished during one of our extended bait stops. The fish itself isn't the big subject of today's image. The lure is. Without a doubt these “knife”and “Flat Fall” style jigs have produced more tuna's this season than I have ever seen. There have been many times now when the jigs during a stop out fish the bait. As an angler it's a point to remember.
