Ixtapa Zihuatanejo Fish Report

4-23-2015
Larry Edwards

The Zihuatanejo fish counts are increasing with each passing day which is very good news since the numbers of anglers at the dock has decreased considerably and only a couple or three boats are now getting out during the week. According to Captain Temo Verboonen, the sailfish bite is up quite a bit and there was some much better cooperation from the blue marlin this past week, too. The inshore fishing was good for the bigger jack crevalle, bonitos and roosterfish, especially in the Valentin river area. Overall, the conditions have improved a great deal over the past couple of weeks and the fish seem to want o cooperate and bite much better now that some of the underlying cooler water currents have dissipated.

IZ Climate: It was a mostly sunny and warm week with just an occasional passing cloud and mostly clear skies. Air temperatures varied from 70 nights to 90 daytime highs and a 62% average humidity level.

Sea Conditions: Sea surface temperatures remained very good and ranged from 84 inshore to 85 offshore. The tropical surface breezes were flowing in from the westerly directions and ranged from near calm to about 10 mph. All is excellent for fishing in mostly calm waters.

Best Fishing Area: The better fishing is currently starting at about 12 miles out front of the Bay and working outbound from there to about 15-16 miles or so.

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits are working well for the sailfish and for the occasional blue marlin, too. The bigger artificials and bigger trolling baits are working better for the blue marlin. Live bait and poppers continue to work well for the roosterfish and bigger jack crevalle for the inshore cirtcuit.

Bait Supply: The bait supply remains in good shape with plenty of fresh baits for rigging and quality live bait for those that fish the inshore waters or prefer casting live baits to the billfish. Live bait continues at $5.00 per dozen.
