The final day running south passes in silent reflection. The stakes are such that this is a ritual I find more necessary, more important as my time spent on the ocean expands. Down below finishing touches are applied to equipment, last minute adjustments are made, thought about, readjusted, and made again; just about anything at this point to occupy the time that crawls by in nautical miles.

And in a flash, one silver and powder blue streak through the lights tomorrow in the early a.m., all travel will be forgotten. We will be there, and here, living the dream, now reality, that is long range fishing. The show begins.

Photo today features a clutch of fat bigeye tuna awaiting their fate in the ever shrinking bag of a giant purse seine net. Courtesy of ISSF and scientist David Itano, this image strikes a yearning in me to learn by supporting such worthy research projects. And also, naturally, I wouldn't mind catching a few of those beauties on a rod and reel.

On these passages to the distant south there is plenty of time to reflect, and conjure new takes, upon tales of past heroics. Other than a little levity there isn't much else in the way of action to report...... Read More
