I believe the old saying goes "It's better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all". The love today came in the form of three opportunities at the big yellowfin tuna we were hoping to find, but the fact that we lost all three, as uncharacteristic as that is for us, was mighty painful. Otherwise it was a long day of searching with plenty of ground covered following which I offer this assessment.

I believe that we will see some action on the big fish this season. There were plenty of small indications today and for roughly the entire previous week as all of us who have dedicated the time to look have encountered at least one or two decent spots that have showed scant interest in biting but are definitely filling in. This type of sign is very typical and bodes well for productivity as the season progresses. If one harkens back, more often than not the lower zone, that encompasses a very broad area, is more likely to come on in late November and early December. What we are seeing now affirms this pattern. Of course we have seen good fishing on trophy yellowfin in the lower zones as early some years as mid October. But, as I see it presently, the more consistent pattern of later development appears to be on track for 2008. We will see. For now we are pleased to be finding scattered indications of big fish and will continue to invest the time and effort down here. As far as our results today are concerned another old saying I am fond of is that sometimes you have to kiss a few frogs to find a princess - or prince, depending on your preference. For us today it was straight frogs and no princesses. But, I am satisfied that the effort was well worth it.

With a big zero logged today we are obviously in the market for a new area. It sounds like we have a few very good options to recover in the catching department with good weather to compliment the effort. We will see if the fish cooperate and report accordingly.
