With the arrival of a big south swell from hurricane Ileana came a significant change at the south end of Guadalupe that we have experienced many times in the past. The end result was a marked slow down in the fishing that has been red hot during the past week. Not that the fishing took a complete nose dive; it didn't, but it was much more difficult to establish any kind of a consistent bite on all the different spots around the island.The one thing that did not change was the appetite of the local Great White Sharks that has been thoroughly satisfied during the past ten days without ruining our daily totals simply because the fishing has been so good. Today was a different story however as the slower pace of hooking an occasional one or two tuna meant plenty of heartbreak as the marauding behemoths picked off a stunning ninety percent of what was on the lines. Needless to say that scenario gets old in a hurry regardless of how spectacular the beasts are. As such we spent more time than previous days moving around in search of shark free zones determined to outmaneuver our nemesis. In the end we finished the day with a respectable score of quality yellowfin while the night action on thirty pound class yellowtail came through as well. We plan to give the other end a good check tomorrow morning before heading up the line for home.
