THE IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT FOR THE INDEPENDENT SPORTFISHING FLEET
Captain Temo Verboonen reported in for the fishing & catching in Zihuatanejo that reflected a little slower fishing this past week due mostly to water temp and clarity changes for the first 15 miles from the Bay. While the water was clean green, it was not the deep blue that the fish prefer. Some of the boats had good luck with the fishing and landed dorado, sailfish and marlin and even a few big yellowfin tuna. Still, we are seeing lots of anglers at the dock everyday and that's always good news. The inshore fishing slowed up, too, as the water turned darker green and colder. However, we did find roosterfish by the Valentin River and in Puerto Vicente areas. Captain Chiro Barragan of the "Bloody Hook" reported in for fishing with our client, Mr. Eric Backman, Rock Springs, WY, landing 6 sailfish and losing a sailfish, and a small dorado on their first day of their 3 days fished.
IZ Climate: It was a mostly sunny & toasty warm week with a few passing clouds in the mix and superb temperatures that ranged from 65 nights to 87 daytime highs and a humidity level at 70%.
Sea Conditions: A little rough and bumpy for three days and then settling down to the normal calmness that everyone appreciates. Tropical surface breezes flowing mostly from the westerly directions and finally simmering down to about to nearly calm to about 10 mph. Water temps fell a couple of degrees to 80-81 inshore and rising to about 82 offshore.
Best Fishing Area: In the bluer waters outside the 15 mile mark and westerly from the Bay.
Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits were working well for the sailfish and live bonito working well on the marlin strikes, albeit, the blue marlin were not being too eager to swallow the baits.
v Bait Supply: Excellent supply of freshly caught baits for rigging, provided with the charters and live baits, preferred by some of the anglers, at the $5.00 per dozen rate. The bonitos were caught on the troll and used for bait.
