Loreto Fish Report

2-12-2015
Gary Graham

We have been having some early-summer temperatures mixed with September sprinkles and winter winds, all in one week. Southern California's Santa Ana winds popped up on Wednesday traveled all the way to Loreto. Thursday should be some of the same and the weather sites are calling for rain to be back starting Saturday.

There were only a few days when the north winds allowed full-day opportunities to attack the local yellowtail. One trip to the north scored limits of cabrilla and medium-sized yellowtail. The group took a load of sardina, the Almejas, the inside bay and the high spot, and nailed most of their fish with irons.

Chumming with the sardina got the cabrilla boiling along the North Shore rocks with all the cabrilla caught on irons.

Out at the high spot, the iron worked again for yellowtail between 12 and 18 pounds. In 200 feet of water the action was happening halfway up. A pair of firecrackers did fall victim to the fly-lined sardina.

Our southern friends from Puerto Escondido had one great day on the yellows. They came up north to the deep spot off Coronado Island to catch mackerel and returned to fish El Bajo and Six Mile Reef.

Ten yellows to 24 pounds between the two spots were taken all on mackerel. They commented that both spots "were loaded" with fish. The long trip to catch bait paid off. Still no "honey hole" for mackerel has been located close to Escondido.

Good action on sierra with spoons and jointed hard baits off the rocks at the Loreto Marina and the docks at Puerto Escondido! ...Rick Hill, Pinchy Sportfishing

These areas are between Ensenada and Colonet. All the rock piles and hard bottom areas in 20 fathoms or greater are loaded up with yellowtail. Shallower than that, the lingcod action is flat out excellent ... could have knocked them silly with a bass rod and plastics! Try looking at rock piles in 9- to 12-fathoms for the lingcod and deeper, from 20- to 40-fathoms, for the yellowtail. Then try looking at Rock Piles in 9- to 12-fathoms for the Lingcod and......
