Brian Sims brought Qualifier 105 home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing October 22 after entertaining AHI chartermasters Gary Van der Lyke and Dallas Lamb and the other 20 anglers aboard this long-running charter.

"Morning found us working the bottom with drooper loops," read the Q's online entry for October 19, "hitting a variety of species, and then they hit...the Yellowtails, first 18 to 20's. Then the better/bigger boys showed up...25 to 35's, most 30 to 35's...Sweet, real sweet...some of the hardest pulling fish, if you weren't on 80, you were losing fish! We finally had all of that happiness that our bodies could handle and we went Wahoo hunting...got a few in and we are hunting yet.

"Today's AHI of the Day is William Lee. William decided to rig up a Butterfly jig and Sardine combo...hooked up on two DoDo's and wrapped up six other people...what an AHI. Farmer of the Day goes to Tracy Blackman for fishing on the wrong side of the boat and wrapping up lines on the other side of the boat...Rookie move! The food on this trip is beyond good...in 17 years this is the best dining ever, a big that'a boy for Mark and Jerry...Beautiful weather, nice seas...life is good."

"The trip had a lot of variety and good yellowtail fishing on The Ridge," said Van der Lyke, an Escondido auto broker.

His partner Dallas Lamb like it even better, as he won first place for a big tuna and also had the best dorado at 22 pounds. Trophies were awarded for several species, including wahoo.

Lamb's yellowfin weighed 115 pounds, and bit a sardine on a 3/0 Mutu hook. He said he fished with 50-pound fluorocarbon leader and 50-pound Big Game line, on an Okuma CT 30 N reel and a Calstar 7465 rod.

"I got him in 45 minutes," said Dallas, from Rancho San Diego, at the scales. "The reel has a very good grind."

Curt Scott of Spring Valley won second place with a 113-pound tuna, and Richard Goldberg of San Carlos was third for a 111-pound tuna. Jeffrey Tedmori of Newport Beach, 13, had the trip's best yellowtail, a 46.6-pounder, and was asked to join the lineup. He goes to Prentice School.
