Central Sierras/Highway 4 Fishing Report September 3rd, 2007

Lake Alpine was the hot spot over Labor Day weekend. Fly fishermen faired the best. Fly casters should try caddis, sparrow nymphs, mosquitoes, mayflies, adams, and woolly buggers. Trollers should try Apex, Needlefish, and Glitter Bugs tipped with a nightcrawler behind a small dodger or flasher/nightcrawler combo.Bait casters should try salmon eggs, inflated nightcrawlers, floating Power Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Eggs, and Gulp Nightcrawlers. Lure casters should try Kastmasters, Rapalas, and Panther Martin spinners.

Spicer Lake's ramp and dock is now out of the water. For those able to launch be aware of rocks just under the surface. Trollers should try Apex, Needlefish, Wedding Rings, and Glitter Bugs tipped with a nightcrawler behind a small dodger or flasher or a flasher/nightcrawler combo. Bait casters should try floating Power Eggs, inflated nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Eggs, and Gulp Nightcrawlers. Fly fishermen should try caddis, woolly buggers, adams, nymphs, stimulators, and mayflies. Lure casters should try Kastmasters, Rapalas, and Panther Martin spinners. Highland Creek has been high due to the release out of Spicer.

The North Fork of the Stanislaus River has been slow due to warm weather, and higher water due to the release of water from Spicer. Bait casters should try inflated nightcrawlers, crickets, salmon eggs, and floating Power Eggs. Lure casters should try Rapalas, and Panther Martin spinners. Fly fishermen have had success using woolly buggers, nymphs, hoppers, caddis, stimulators, adams, and mayflies.

White Pines Lake, located near Arnold still has some nice fish to be caught. Make sure you fish early morning or late afternoon as the lake is shallow and warms up during the day. Try using floating Power Eggs and a cast-a-bubble with a 30" to 36" leader.

Mosquito Lake has still been producing some nice limits of trout. Bait casters should try using floating Power Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Eggs, inflated nightcrawlers, and Gulp Nightcrawlers. Fly fishermen should try caddis, mosquitoes, adams, woolly buggers, nymphs, hoppers, stimulators and mayflies.

Labor Day weekend is this upcoming weekend. Make sure to call ahead for camping or lodging information to reserve your favorite place. Spicer Lake's ramp is now out of the water and the dock is only partially in the lake. If you have 4 wheel drive you can still launch a small boat but beware of all the rocks just below the surface as the lake has dropped.
