Central Sierras/Highway 4 Fishing Report August 29th, 2007

Labor Day weekend is this upcoming weekend. Make sure to call ahead for camping or lodging information to reserve your favorite place.

Lake Alpine has been good fishing early morning and the last hour of the evening. Trollers should try using Apex, Needlefish, and Glitter Bugs behind a small dodger tipped with a nightcrawler or flasher/nightcrawler combo. Baitcasters should try floating Power Eggs, Gulp Powwer Bait, Gulp Eggs, nightcrawlers, and salmon eggs on a 30" to 36" leader. Lure casters should try Panther Martin Spinners, Rapalas. and Kastmasters. Fly casters should try caddis flies, mayflies, nymphs, hoppers, muddler minnows, adams, and blue wing olive flies.

The ramp at Spicer Lake is now out of the water with only the tip of the dock still in the water. You will need a 4 wheel drive to launch. If you do launch at Spicer beware of all the rocks that are just under the surface around the lake. Trollers should try using Apex, Needlefish, Wedding Rings, and Glitter Bugs tipped with a nightcrawler behind a small dodger or a flasher/nightcrawler combo. Bait casters should try inflated nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, floating Power Eggs, Gulp Power Bait, Gulp Nightcrawlers, and Gulp Eggs. Fly casters should try using hoppers, crickets, adams, ants, mayflies, and nymphs. Lure casters should try Rapalas, and Panther Martin spinners.

The North Fork of the Stanislaus has been slow due to heat and the full moon. Bait fishermen should try split-shotting inflated nightcrawlers, salmon eggs,crickets, Floating Power Eggs, Gulp Eggs, and Gulp Nightcrawlers. Lure casters should try Panther Martin spinners, and Rapalas. Fly fishermen should try hoppers, adams, woolly buggers, mayflies, caddis, and nymphs.

White Pines Lake, located near Arnold, has been producing fish early morning and late evening. Try using floating Power Eggs on a 30" to 36" leader using a cast-a-bubble.

Mosquito Lake has been producing some fat rainbows. This last week a customer brought in a 5lb. 4oz. beauty caught with a floating power egg/salmon egg combo. Bait casters should try power egg/salmon egg combo, nightcrawlers, Gulp Eggs, Gulp Nightcrawler, and crickets on a 30" to 36" leader. Lure casters should try Rapalas, Kastmasters, and Panther Martin spinners. Fly fishermen should try caddis, nymphs, woolly buggers, hoppers, adams, and mayflies.

For an adventure and a chance to catch some beautiful brook trout try Highland Lake. Fly fishermen should try hoppers, adams, nymphs, woolly buggers, caddis, and mayflies.

Spicer Lake's ramp is now out of the water and the dock is only partially in the lake. If you have 4 wheel drive you can still launch a small boat but beware of all the rocks just below the surface as the lake has dropped. For those that are able to launch there are still some nice fish to be caught. Lake Alpine has picked up this past week due to recent trout plants. Trollers should try using Apex, Needlefish, and Glitter Bugs tipped with a nightcrawler behind a small dodger or a flasher/ nightcrawler combo. The fish are around the 20' to 25' foot depth.
