Rookies On Six

10-3-2006
Bill Roecker

Roy Rose brought Royal Polaris home October 3 to Fisherman's Landing after a six-day trip with 36 anglers.

"It was an excellent group of first-timers," he said. "We went to Benitos, Cedros and Guadalupe."

On October 1, he wrote, "Today was another scratch day of fishing; we did have a good 15 minute go around. We were able to keep 4 to 8 going in that time frame, and boy were they coming aboard; it was a good time. The grade was 18 to 25 pounds , with a few 50 to 70 pounders; yellowfin tuna. We also released 25 yellowtail. These first-timers are pros in my book. They have taken advantage of every good bite, and done it with minimal losses."

Dennis Klemp of Warrenton, OR won first and third places for tuna of 73 and 66 pounds. He said he got his big one on a sardine and a 3/0 ringed Super Mutu hook, and used 40-pound Izorline on an Avet two-speed reel and a Seeker nine-foot rod.

Bart Lewellyn of Medford, OR was third, for a 67-pound tuna.
