Andy Cates took his 22 Red Rooster III anglers on a seven-day Jeff Johnson charter trip to Alijos Rocks, and docked the rig at H&M Landing August 26.
"There was sign of tuna there at the Rocks," he said, "but the sharks ate us up the first day. On the second day they ate just about everything, so we cleared out and headed up for Cedros Island and some very good yellowtail fishing."
In his written report Andy said, "Between the sharks and the fish on small flyers there was not much else we could do."
Scott Langlois of Rancho Cucamonga won first place for a 65-pound yellowfin tuna. "I got him in about 15 minutes," he said. "He took me up to the bow, and over the anchor line so many times I blistered my fingers."
Archie Irion of Escondido was second, for a 61-pound tuna, and Mark Seymour of West Garden Grove won third place for a 60.1-pound yellowfin tuna.
Jimmy Baxter of Albuquerque, NM won the trolling jackpot for a 46-pound wahoo that bit on a purple and black Marauder jig. That fish brought a $400 prize, with $200 going to the fund for Jorge Nicifore, the Rooster's long-time chef, who is undergoing medical treatments. Contributors will find the fund listed on the Rooster's home page.
