Mazatlan Fishing Report

10-16-2014
Larry Edwards

There was a terrific mix of fish this past week from Mazatlan for both the inshore and offshore anglers. As the weather begins to settle into the fall patterns, the fish are starting to get frisky and are providing a better bite for the anglers. The offshore cruisers reported in for 16 days fished that reflected 2 stripers, 6 sailfish, (1 released) 8 yellowfin tuna, (20-25 lbs.) and 61 dorado, (12-20 lbs.) and the inshore super pangas reporting in for a total of 6 days fished reflected 3 sailfish, 10 corvina, 10 snapper, 7 dorado and 5 black snook. While the numbers reflect a 50-50 chance for a billfish for both, inshore and offshore, consider that many anglers do not want to target billfish which would dramatically increase the percentage chances.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly sunny & warm days with a few passing clouds and pleasant evenings. Temps ranged from 73 nights to 91 daytime highs and an 88% humidity rate.

Sea Conditions: Sea temps stable at 87-88, inshore and offshore. Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southwest directions from light & variable to 12 mph.

Best Fishing Area: Starting at about 14 miles southwest of the Marina El Cid and working out to the south from there, then to the fad buoys that are still holding good numbers of dorado.

Best Lure/Bait: Rigged biats working very well for the billfish. Tuna taken on feathers and the dorado were taken on a variety of artificials, both surface and diving lures, along with live bait and rigged baits.

Bait Supply: Remains very good for both fresh rigging baits and live bait. Rigging baits are provided gratis as part of the charter and live baits are $1.00 per bait.
