Mazatlan Fishing Report

10-9-2014
Larry Edwards

Finally, the weather has settled down substantially through the Tropic of Cancer and the fish seemed to want to bite a little for the Aries Sportfishing Fleet. There was only one single port closure last week and the weather looking forward is appearing to be all on the bright side. Just keep our fingers crossed. The fish that continues to be absent from the greater Mazatlan area is the black and blue marlin. usually by this time, there have been many reports of the bigger billfish but so far this year, not a single black or blue has been reported and that's a first since we started reporting catches for the Aries Fleet, about 15 years ago or so. Maybe they are stacking up off Cabo and waiting for the Bisbee Tournament to go bye? Still, the sailfish are biting a bit and good dorado catches, too, along with a few smaller sharks in the mix. The report for 14 days fished offshore reflected 9 sailfish, (3 released) 9 sharks, (8 released) and 39 dorado and 4 inshore super panga fishing days reflected 1 striper and 20 dorados. The super panga, "Anzuelo III" had a terrific day early in the week with a single striper and limits of dorado for their anglers.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy days with some intermittent sunshine and scattered T-storms through the week with temps that ranged from 74 nights to 90 daytime highs and a humidity level at about 94%.

Sea Conditions: Sea temps stable at 84-85 degrees. Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southerly directions to 13 mph. One day port closure due to inclement weather conditions.

Best Fishing Area: Most of the boats were trolling outbound from the 16-17 mile mark southwest of the Marina El Cid.

Best Bait/Lure: Rigged baits worked best for the sailfish and a few of the larger dorado, too. A few dorado taken on artificilas and some on live bait.

Bait Supply: Excellent! Fresh baits for rigging and live bait available at $1.00 per live bait.
