"We spent two and a half days at Guadalupe," said Excel skipper Shawn Steward after he docked the rig at Fisherman's Landing August 30. "One was a good day. We also went in to San Martin and worked over the reds (rockfish) pretty good there."
Shawn was just back from a five-day run with 32 anglers, a Haj Shimada open trip. His wife and eight-month-old son Christopher Robin were there to meet him.
At the scales, Dick McConihay of Sherman Oaks proved to have the best fish, a 112-pound yellowfin. He said he got it with a sardine on a Bob Sands hook and leader, a Penn 16 reel by Cal Sheets and a Calstar rod of unknown model.
Keith Miller of Newhall was second, for a 110-pounder, and Jim Miller of Bakersfield won third place for a 103-pound yellowfin tuna.
"We hooked five wahoo and got three on the boat," remarked Steward. The best one looked to be about a 50-pounder, taken by Gerald Fukui of Playa del Rey, on a Marauder. All of the wahoo bit on Marauders.
