Mazatlan Fishing Report
4-17-2014
Larry Edwards
The billfish bite increased this past week and the fish were much more cooperative than the week before. They went from just being seen on the surface to wanting to bite a little and it sure makes a difference for the anglers and the crews. The "Aries I", skippered by Captain Jose Villa, was high billfish boat for the week and had a 4 striper day, (3 releases) on Sunday, starting up the new week. The overall fish counts for 21 offshore fishing days reflected 12 stripers, (5 released) 4 dorado, (some bigger dorado showing up with fish to more than 40 lbs.) and 4 yellowfin tuna in the 20-30 lb. range. The inshore super pangas, reporting in for 5 days fished, reflected 43 red snappers, 57 rock perch and 36 triggerfish.
Mazatlan Climate: Partly cloudy days with intermittent sunshine and temps that ranged from 58 nights to 87 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Calm seas in the am with surface breezes to 13 mph in the pm. Inshore temps at 74-75 and rising to 77-78 in the offshore waters.
Best Fishing Area: Starting at about 17 miles southerly from the Marina El Cid and working outward from there.
Best Lure/Bait: Rigged baits continue to outperform the artificials for the billfish.
Bait Supply: Remains excellent for both, live baits and fresh baits for rigging.
