Cabo San Lucas Fishing Report

3-27-2014
Larry Edwards

The excitement for the week was the 78.5 lb. wahoo, taken on a rigged ballyhoo, just out in front of Cabo Bay at the Herradura, (Horse Shoe). It was a short, fat fish, (70" long & 30" girth) that required a 30 minute battle on 80 lb. line. Angler Stathy Demeris, Bellaire, TX, was the lucky angler aboard the "Gaviota VI", skippered by Captain Juan Ruiz & his brother, Cesar Ruiz, the Mate. The billfish bite continued to be on the slow side this past week and only 44% of the boats landed a billfish. High billfish boat for the week was the "Gaviota VIII", releasing 3 stripers for 3 fishing days and that was followed by "Fish Cabo", releasing 3 stripers for 4 fishing days. The overall fish counts for a combined total of 27 days fished reflected 12 stripers, (11 released) 11 dorado, 3 mako sharks, 1 wahoo, 7 skipjacck tuna and 1 Sierra.

Cabo Climate: Partly cloudy days through the week and clear skies and sunshine for the weekend with temps that varied from 63 nights to 92 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions: Pacific side, from Golden Gate Bank to Jaime Bank and in to Cabo Falso, temps were all at 75-75. The temp break was at Cabo Falso, rising to 77 degrees and gradually increasing to 78-79 from Chileno and into the Sea of Cortez. There were varied surface breezes from the northeast to southeast at 13-16 mph.

Best Fishing Area: There was no real concentration of billfish this past week and the boats fished all of the hot spot areas, landing a fish here and there.

Best Bait/Lure: Cabo's new secret weapon, the rigged ballyhoo, has been one of the leading attractors of the billfish and was also the bait that was consumed by the big wahoo. Live bait was working fairly well but the slow trolled, rigged ballyhoo, were doing best, including the mako sharks.

Live Bait Availability: A very good bait supply at the usual $3.00 per bait rate. Also available are the frozen ballyhoo rigging baits, also at the rate of $3.00 each.
