Puerto Morelos Fishing Report

3-14-2014
Larry Edwards

It was another really good fishing and catching week for the Marina El Cid Fleet from Puerto Morelos, even minus any reports of billfish this go-round. We saw a 15 fish variety this past week for a total of 24 days fished and the catches did reflect an increase in giant barracuda action that always makes for happy anglers. The overall fish counts reflected 44 bonito, (the fish of the week by numbers) 4 amberjack, 4 wahoo, 15 giant barracuda, 5 Spanish mackerel, 2 rainbow runners, 1 blackfin tuna, 2 king mackerel, 17 strawberry fish, 32 mixed snappers, 17 banana fish, 13 soap fish, 2 grumpy fish, 13 triggerfish and 1 grouper. There was plenty of action and the counts averaged out at 8 fish per outing.

PM Climate: Partly cloudy to cloudy days with temps at 63 nights to 87 daytime highs. If you're from the snow country, that's very toasty weather.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes ranged from light to a single day at 18 mph, mostly flowing from the easterly directions. Sea temps stable at 81 degrees throughout the area from Cancun to Cozumel.

Best Bait/Lure: The bait of choice continues to be the ever present ballyhoo that are freshly provided on a daily basis.

Bait Supply: Continues to be excellent everyday with more than a sufficient supply of ballyhoo for all of the boats.
