Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo Fishing Report
3-6-2014
Larry Edwards
The offshore fishing from Zihuatanejo Bay remains on the slow side for sailfish but the marlin bite did pick up for a couple of days during the week. Now that the sea temps have rebounded the sailfish should start back up again and the marlin bite will also likely improve in the coming week. According to Captain Temo Verboonen, there is no concentration of fish in any specific area and the boats are having to make a search on each fishing day. Even the inshore bite was slow this past week. We saw some big schools of jack crevalle but they ignored all kinds o lures and just wouldn't cooperate and bite. On Tuesday, we saw a big school of roosterfish chasing sardines in close to the beach and fins were popping everywhere. They would bite the fly streamers and we did land our share, but they ignored the poppers and jigs. They probably would have taken the live bait but we hadn't taken live bait on that day. The Sierra, chulas and bonito are darting around at high speed and very difficult to catch in the colder water.
IZ Climate: There were only a couple of partly cloudy days with the remainder sunny and warm. Temps ranged from 71 nights to 89 daytime highs. Picture perfect weather and conditions.
Sea Conditions: Mostly light & variable offshore breezes flowing in from the westerly directions. Sea temps at 81 inshore and rising to 83 at the 100 fathom curve. The temps continue to rise to 85-86 at about the 10-12 mile mark, directly out front of the Bay.
Best Fishing Area: There was no specific area of fish concentration this past week and the boats were continuing to search far & wide areas.
Best Bait/Lure: The few sailfish taken were all on rigged baits. The marlin were more partial to the bigger lures and bigger live baits on the troll.
Bait Supply: The bait supply was just fine for the week for both, live bait and fresh baits for rigging. Live bait is $5.00 per dozen paid direct to the bait vendor.
