IXTAPA-ZIHUATANEJO FISHING REPORT

2-27-2014
Larry Edwards

Another very difficult fishing week for the anglers and sportfishers from Zihuatanejo, according to our reporter, Captain Temo Verboonen. Temo maintains the water temps are too cool and changing too often, causing the lack of a sustained bite on the sailfish and marlin. Also, the water clarity out to about 15 miles or more is very green and not conducive to the good billfish catches they were having. Only a boat here and there was lucky enough to land a billfish or dorado and it has made for some rather long fishing days for the anglers and the crews. The inshore fishing is just so-so but still fair for the chulas, bonito, and Sierra. The roosterfish have moved and the jack crevalle seem to be hiding and making it difficult to find them in the deeper water and more offshore.

IZ Climate: Lots of sunshine and warm, toasty days with a few passing clouds. Air temps ranged from 70 nights to 89 daytime highs. Near picture perfect weather throughout the area.

Sea Conditions: Surface breezes flowing mostly from the southerly directions from almost zero to 9 mph, allowing for calm seas. Sea temps at 78-79 inshore and rising to 81-82 offshore. Clarity good at about 18 miles or so and inside of that, the water is dirty green.

Best Fishing Area: There was no concentration for the offshore fish in any direction. most of the boats were not even putting the lines in the water until the 18+ mile mark or so, where the clarity line makes a break.

Best Bait/Lure: Most of the offshore fish have been taken on the fresh rigged trolling baits. Trolling plugs were working pretty good for the jack crevalle at about 8 miles offshore, but not easy to find the schools.

Bait Supply: Remains excellent for both, fresh baits for rigging and plenty of live bait at the $5.00 per dozen rate.
