Mazatlan Fishing Report
3-6-2014
Larry Edwards
Mazatlan just completed the best February offshore fishing we have ever reported and has already started to be one of the best March fishing months in history. The offshore billfish action has not let up and if anything, gets better with the passing of time. Normally by this time of year we are experiencing typical winter conditions when the waters are coolest of the year, but not so far this year. Water temps are holding up very well and the bite continues, week after week, making for a lot of very happy anglers and crews. This past week continued with the offshore billfish bite and added a few dorado in the mix, no to mention a sailfish, too. The high billfish boat for the week was the Aries I, skippered by Captain Jose Zamora, producing 12 billfish, (11 stripers & 4 releases, along with 1 sailfish released and even a couple of dorado to round out his catches. The overall catches for a total of 29 days fished reflected 46 stripers, (22 released) 1 sailfish released and 10 dorado for the offshore fishing. The inshore super pangas reporting in for a total of 8 days reflected 2 stripers, (1 released) and 11 dorado.
Mazatlan Climate: A very pleasant and mostly sun shinning week with only an occasional passing cloud for a couple of days. Temps ranged from a cool 53 nights to 83 daytime highs.
Sea Conditions: Sea temps at 73 inshore and rising to 75-76 in the offshore waters. Surface breezes flowing from the southerly directions from very light to 12 mph.
Best Fishing Area: Remains in the 15-25 mile area out to the south of the Marina El Cid.
Best Lure/Bait: The freshly rigged trolling baits continue to be the bait of choice but a few stripers are being taken on artificials and live bait, too.
Bait Supply: An excellent bait supply for both, freshly caught baits for rigging, and live bait at the $1.00 per bait rate.
