Wohlford Lake Trout opener included many limits & near limits
12-14-2013
Wohlford Lake Staff
Park Hours: 6:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. Open seven days a week (closed x-mas)
Dock Closes: 4:30 P.M.
Last Plant: 4,500 lbs. of Channel Catfish Wednesday, Dec 11th
Next Plant: 1,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Wednesday December 18th
Water Temperature: At surface 62.10 f., 5.92 D.O. @ 15' 61.46 f., 6.41 D.O.
Water Level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and Thursdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. Half day bass boats are available weekdays for 35$ each.
The trout opener was a success with some limits and near limits being taken out of Boat Dock Cove and west of Senior Shoreline. Inflated nightcrawlers or powerbait (rainbow, chartreuse) are the preferred baits. With consecutive plants following the opener the fishing should remain lively well into the New Year.
The fishing for catfish, particularly the larger cats, remains excellent. Lake Wohlford cats prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. Drop by the ranger station for an excellent dough-bait recipe that works well for either catfish or carp.
Bass are biting in the early mornings and late afternoons. The bass are most often caught near rocky outcroppings. The reintroduction of trout into the lake means the bass are likely to respond well to swimbaits that resemble small trout.
2014 fishing licenses are now available for purchase at the café and would make an excellent gift for any avid fisherman.
