Andy Cates brought Red Rooster III home to H&M Landing July 12 after a four-day trip to Cedros, Guadalupe and the newly-discovered albacore waters about 80 or 90 miles from San Diego. Cates took his son Andrew on the trip, and the younger Cates caught at least three large yellowtail.
"We tried off Guadalupe first," said the senior Cates, "and Cedros was good. Then we left at 3:30 in the afternoon and ran all the way back up. We got there about 24 hours later, and most of the bite was over for the day, but we managed to get some action and about 50 albacore.
"Most of the albies we encountered were on the sonar, but we also saw some up and jumping, or feeding on bait."
Greg Zakharin of Santa Monica won first place, for a 30.6-pound yellowtail. He said he caught it with a sardine on a 2/0 Super Mutu hook and 30-pound Maxima line. He used a TLD 10 reel and a Seeker 660 rod.
Jim Vreeland of Solvang won second place for a 30.1-pound yellowtail, and John Owen of Ventura won third place for a 30-pound yellow
