A terrific fishing week from Cabo San Lucas and the billfish action has been awesome

Its been Multiple hookups and double digit numbers were the rule of the week for many of the area's sportfishers with all of the action on the Sea of Cortez side of the peninsula and stretching from the 1150 fathom spot to the outer Gorda Banks area. Captain Roberto Marquez, owner of the Fish Cabo Fleet, said the fishing was like we would expect in November & December on the Golden Gate Bank and in some cases the only thing that slowed up the catch numbers was the lack of angler stamina. The stripers have been unusually eager to bite at most anything offered, including the arttificials and rigged ballyhoo baits and of course, the live bait is the really hot ticket item. High boat for the week was the "Tuna Time", reporting in with 18 stripers released for 4 days fished and followed by the "Fish Cabo" with 15 stripers released for 4 days fished. The overall combined catches for a total of 31 fishing days reflected 77 stripers, (74 released) 6 dorado and 1 yellowfin tuna.

Cabo Climate: Sunny and hot days with some passing clouds. Temps have varied from 73 nights to 96 daytime highs and the surface breezes have generally been flowing in from the SSE at 10-20 mph. There's another hurricane below Cabo at about 375 miles or so and it appears that it will move off to the westerly directions during the next few days. We are watching another low pressure tropical depression below the Acapulco area, (about 800 miles from Cabo) holding a great deal of moisture and is also likely to change into hurricane status during the next several days or shortly after the weekend and it seems to currently be flowing up the coast of Mexico in the offshore waters but with a span that can easily reach the coastal cities.

Sea Conditions: Pacific side has cooler waters inshore, along the coastline, extending 5-6 miles offshore and flowing southerly from Todos Santos and around the corner to Chileno Bay, with water temps at 71 degrees. Outside the 5-6 mile mark, the water temps move up to 74-75 degrees, all along the same path as the cooler inshore waters. Big change comes at Palmilla Point, out to the 1150 fathom spot and out along the 1000 fathom curve with water temps increasing to 77-80 degrees.

Best Fishing Area: There are two distinct areas at the moment that include the 1150 fathom spot and the Outer Gorda Banks area, with both producing excellent billfish catches for the anglers.

Best Lure/Bait: Live bait continues to be best but good numbers of billfish strikes are happening on a variety of artificials and the ballyhoo baits.

Live Bait Supply: Continues to be very good for live caballitos, along with frozen ballyhoo, all at $3.00 per bait.
