Fish Report for 6-6-2013
Last week has provided some difficult weather conditions for the Puerto Morelos area
6-6-2013
Larry Edwards
The last week has provided some difficult weather conditions for the Riviera Mayan portion of the Yucatan peninsula and the Puerto Morelos fishing fleet from the Marina El Cid was directly affected with the closing of the Port for three different days. While it's a little early for the tropical storms, they have arrived on location and while not hurricanes, the rains have been heavy for the area. On the days that the boats could go fishing, we received reports reflecting a total of 15 days fished that resulted in a 10 fish mixed bag catch that included 3 white marlin, (all caught aboard the "Hammer") 1 sailfish, 24 dorado, (the fish of the week) 1 wahoo, 1 blackfin tuna, 2 giant barracuda, 2 Sierra, 11 bonito, 2 cabrilla and 1 pargo.
PM Climate: Mostly cloudy but warm weather and of course, some rain, too, during the past week as the season's first tropical depression flows through the area, (Invest 91L) flowing northerly at 4 mph from the tip of the Yucatan peninsula and now looks like it will arrive in Louisiana in a few days. Weather forecast for Wednesday & Thursday were 1-2" of rain throughout the area, before the rain starts to dissipate. Air temps ranged from 78 nights to 88 daytime highs and tropical surface breezes ranged from 5 mph to 20mph for a couple of days and then subsided to 5-15 mph, all coming from an easterly flow. Once this low pressure departs the area, the fishing and overall conditions should immediately rebound.
Sea Conditions: Water temps remained very good for the area and held at 82-83 degrees and a few days of popcorn conditions (wind chop) and of course, the 3 port closure days by the Port Captain, based on safety conditions.
Best Bait: The always favorite ballyhoo continues to be the bait of choice for the Puerto Morelos Fleet and remains available on a daily basis in various sizes, all of which is provided gratis as part of the charter fishing arrangement.
