Catfish at Wohlford Lake are devouring everything in sight
11-24-2012
Wohlford Lake Staff
Park Hours: 6:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M. (Open Weekends, Closed Monday-Friday)
Dock Closes: 4:30 P.M.
Next Plant: 4,500 lbs. of Rainbow Trout Saturday, December 8th.
Water Temperature: At surface 64.04 f., 4.84 D.O. @ 15' 63.86 f., 3.69 D.O.
Water Level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors, and other equipment that contacts the water.
Beginning December eighth the Lake will re-open for weekday fishing. With 12,000 lbs of Nebraska Tailwalker Trout plants scheduled in just the first two months Lake Wohlford promises to be the spot for limit style fishing and trophy sized trout this winter. Here is what's new for the 2012-2013 season. The senior boat discount, twenty dollars for the whole day, for seniors age 60+ now is available Tuesdays and Thursdays. We will now be offering a half day price of thirty five dollars for our Bass boats Monday through Thursdays after 1:00 p.m. We will continue to discount boats for active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. The lake is once again open to bow-fishing, for carp, for more details visit our website.
Giant Catfish are devouring everything in sight. Hardly a day of fishing can pass without another angler dragging a monster fish to the scales. Saturday saw Gerardo Olozagusto of Vista land a 34.10# blue cat (second only to lake record) on a nightcrawler west of Senior Shoreline. Sunday it was Sam Sengsouly of Escondido who hooked a 32.00# Catfish on cut mackerel in Boat Dock Cove. If these big fish continue this feeding frenzy the lake record may not last the month. Catfish prefer cut mackerel or chicken liver. Stop by the ranger station for a dough bait recipe that works great on both Catfish and Carp.
