The Catfish bite at Lake Poway has been amazing

The catfish bite has been amazing over the past week for the anglers that get in the deeper water and use the right bait! The center and east ends of the Log Boom have been the most productive spots with limits being taken out. The catfish have been so aggressive that bass fishermen have been catching them on lures and soft plastics! The end of Fishing Float and the beach in Boulder Bay have also been productive for shoreline fishing. The water temperature is 66 degrees and should be perfect for next week's Trout Opener on Wednesday, November 21. Bob Hickman and his grandson Jacob Herber of Fallbrook (pictured) caught a 12.5 pound stringer of channel catfish on the East end of the Log Boom on Sunday, November 11. They were using chicken liver and shrimp "with a mackerel spritzer" Bob said. It looks like it was effective. Mackerel, chicken liver and shrimp are still the baits of choice. It might not be a bad idea to have some on hand in case you get your limit of trout next week and still feel like fishing.

The bass are deep and drop-shotting large and small plastics are working well in places like the first two barrels on the Log Boom and the Rock Pile off of Jump-Off Point. There were recent reports of numerous bass caught in the mouth of Hidden Cove. Once the trout are stocked next week bust out the large swimbaits. The bass will become very active and the big ones will start attacking!

Just as a reminder, the opener for our monster Tailwalker rainbow trout will be November 21, 2012 at 6:00 a.m. I have included a detailed list of baits that work well at our lake and how to rig up the powerbait/nightcrawler rig. The concession stand will also remain closed as the new owner is making repairs and many interior changes. It will be well worth the wait and will hopefully be up and running by trout season. But it the meantime, bring your own bait and snacks.
