Fish Report for 11-1-2012
Dorado were the hot bite at Cabo this week
11-1-2012
Larry Edwards
Dorado were the fish of the week for our anglers and they averaged about 6 fish per boat day fished throughout the past week. While the billfish counts slowed up considerably, it was not for a lack of effort or spotting the fish. They were just not eager to bite as we were coming into this full moon phase. However, we have first hand information that the Pacific greenback mackerel have already moved onto the offshore banks and that is normally a very good indicator that the stripers are on their way, albeit, a bit early. We'll see as the next few weeks go by, but normally, the arrival of the mackerel coincides with the arrival of the stripers, especially in the area from the Finger Bank, Golden Gate Bank, Jaime Bank and the Cabo Falso drop off. It would be a very rare occasion for the billfish not to follow the mackerel at this time of year. The overall fish counts for the Gaviota sportfishing fleet and Fish Cabo Fleet reflected a total of 35 days fished and resulted in 5 stripers released, 1 sailfish released, 25 skipjack, 17 yellowfin tuna, (all were school sized fish in the 20-25 lb. ranges) and 202 dorado, (ranged from 10 lbs. to 44 lbs.) and 1 roosterfish.
Cabo Climate: Terrific temps for both day & night and ranging from 63 nights to 87 daytime highs and light and variable surface breezes through the week.
Sea Conditions: Remains near excellent on both sides of the peninsula. Temps on the Pacific side are stable at 82-83 & extend from the Finger Bank down to Cabo and then increase to 84-85 degrees on up to the Gorda Banks and a couple miles above. Good clarity remains on both sides with a little swell coming in from the southwest direction.
Best Fishing Area: The Pacific side continued to be the best area for both, billfish and dorado, especially in the area known as "Margaritas", in the offshore area adjacent to the Golden Gate Bank.
Best Lure/Bait: Live bait was best for the billfish with many dorado taken on smaller lures and feathers in conjunction with a couple of live bait drop backs for additional biters. The yellowfin tuna were taken on feathers.
Bait Supply: The live bait supply was OK, but had a lot of pressure this past week from the numbers of boats fishing in the several tournaments. Caballitos were the main bait and again, some sardines were also available.
