Shogun hooks into some nice Yellowtails before heading up the line
6-21-2012
Bill Roecker
"We rolled into the yellowtail grounds around 3 am this morning," said the report from June 19, "and it wasn't long before we started getting bites. From 4 am till daylight we kept a steady pick going on beautiful grade 22-30lb fish. Dropper loops fished right on the bottom were the key for the early morning bite.
"Unfortunately there was a bit of sea lion problem this morning and we did lose quite a few yellows to the seals. By mid morning the seals got to the point where it was almost unfishable, stealing baits and thieving yellows so we opted to make a move to try and get some cleaner fishing.
Our move took around 2 hours but it was well worth it. We sat on the anchor plunking away at nice 12-15 lb. yellows all the way into the afternoon. We kept a nice pace going for hours, always keeping at least 2-4 fish going at a time. After the bite was over we had put together a great day but we still had more to come. Late afternoon we had one last anchor job on a little nicer 18-22 lb. fish that put the icing on our day.Conditions were a bit difficult today with a steady 25 knot wind blowing all day.
"With the forecast not looking too favorable for our ride home, we opted for an early dinner in a protected area before heading up the line."
