"Wide Open" Dorado Bite at Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo

Larry Edwards

According to Captain Temo Verboonen, our reporter for Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo, the dorado bite was "wide-open" for the past week with easy limit fishing opportunities for 25-35 lb. dorado. Even better, the fish were just a short, 5-mile run outside the Bay. Temo said the sailfish bite, which had been excellent, had slowed down, but the dorado catches had provided terrific action for the few anglers that were fishing. The inshore fishing is very good for roosterfish when the boats can get close enough to the shoreline to entice them to bite. However, the overall weather continues to be problematical for the inshore and offshore fishing that have contributed to port closures and some very windy and rough days. Temo adds, many of the boats are being taken from the water for annual maintenance projects and will be out until early October.

IZ Climate:
Mostly cloudy days with high wind conditions to 30 knots, scattered PM showers and temps that ranged from 72 nights to 89 daytime highs.

Sea Conditions:
Good one day and terrible the next and offering flat surface conditions to unfishable conditions. Temps holding stable at 83-84 degrees throughout the area.

Best Fishing Area:
Just 5 miles or so out of the Bay entrance to the dorado bite.

Best Bait/Lure:
Live bait was best for the dorado catches, using the big eye jacks, (aka goggle eyes).

Bait Supply:
Excellent supply of live bait readily available.
