Brian Kiyohara docked American Angler at Pt. Loma Sportfishing September 1 after a five-day trip with 27 anglers and David Samarin of James Hardware as chartermaster. The group had near-limits of mixed tuna and yellowtail, said Samarin.
"We fished offshore and at Cedros Island," he told dock reporter Bill Roecker. "This is our 10th annual trip. We fished with iron at Cedros, and we hooked two threshers on jigs. One managed to pickup a couple more jigs on his way to the boat. We let them go; they looked to be 100-pounders."
"Big Daddy" Bill Shubin of Downey won first place for a 46.4-pound bluefin tuna. "I knew he was big," said Bill as he posed for a photo. He said he got his fish on a sardine and a 2/0 unknown hook. He used 40-pound Blackwater fluorocarbon leader and 65-pound Power Pro spectra on an Avet JX reel and a Calstar 765 M rod.
David Susoer of Kerman won second place for a 45.2-pounder, and Bill's grandson Kyle Shubin of Rowland Heights won third place for his 44.4-pound bluefin tuna. He said he goes to Sonora High and likes to play water polo.
Will Suhovy of Ontario got the best yellowtail of the trip, a 25.5-pound fish, and stood in with the winners.
