Sam Patella brought American Angler home to Pt. Loma Sportfishing July 6 after a four-day open-party trip to Cedros Island, passing through the bluefin grounds. There were some bluefin in the catch, and they figured in the jackpots.
Mark Takeuchi of Mission Viejo won first place for a husky 40.6-pound yellowtail he bagged with a Salas 7X surface iron in green mackerel configuration.
"He bit around four in the afternoon," said Mark to dock reporter Bill Roecker. "He worked me over for about 25 minutes on the long rod. He's my best yellow so far."
Mark used 40-pound P-Line on a Torium 30 reel and a Calstar 970 rod.
Fred Miyazaki, patriarch of a family of three generations on the trip, won second place for a 36.4-pound bluefin. He also got a 34.2-pound yellowtail. Richard Hunter of Tustin won third place for a 32.4-pound bluefin tuna.
