Rare As Hen's Teeth

Bluefin tuna taken on trolled skirted jig are almost unheard of. I've seen only three or four in 40 years of tuna fishing. But one appeared in the Shogun's catch July 2, caught by Glen Preston of Flagstaff, AZ during a three-day trip that arrived at Fisherman's Landing July 3. The 12.8-pound "football" bit on a Tady M-16 jethead with a green/gold/red skirt that might be called "bleeding dorado." It was the only tuna of the trip, which was tough due to windy weather. The boat moved inside to fish for rockfish.

Lenny Velez of Spring Valley won the jackpot for the best lingcod of his life, an 18.7-pound toothy critter that bit a sardine on a dropper loop. Kenny said he used a 3/0 Owner Flyliner hook on 30-pound P-Line, a Torium 20 reel and a nine-foot Seeker Ulua rod.

Second place went to Jim Kendle of Sacramento, who opted out of the photo. He had an 11.7-pound lingcod. David Sekiguchi of Northridge won third place for an 11.7-pound ling.
