Jason Pound, Robin Strobeck, and Shannon Brawning all told their Collins Lake Fish photographer that their fish was the BIGGEST FISH THEY EVER CAUGHT!! We hear stories such as these over and over again each year. It's not hard to do either since Collins Lake plants Rainbow Trout up to 10 pounds in size. The age old theory that you have to be in the right place at the right time is so true!!
Jason's 6 lb. 12 oz. Rainbow took a hold of his flasher/worm combo which he was trolling around 40 feet down. Robin's 8 lb. 8 oz. Bow could not pass up her Nightcrawler either-she was trolling just past the 5 m.p.h. buoys.Shannon Brawining & family used Powerbait by the dam and caught a hefty 7 Pounder plus 8 more. Daniel Kollewe of Grass Valley caught a 7 lb. 8 oz. Trout just off the dock trolling a Rapala lure.
Between Jennifer & Dan, her fish is the biggest and her bait of choice was worms and his was crickets and they fished from a boat in the north end in 15 feet of water. Lauren, Jenna, and Dad Ryan Barella had a fantastic trip. They hauled out 2 trout limits on 6/5 then Lauren topped the list on 6/6 with her 4 lb. 4 oz. Rainbow Trout she hooked while trolling Nightcrawlers.
Worms are "doing the trick" this year more than any other bait. Troll them, toss them, float them, or dangle them a little off the bottom. When using worms while trolling the best technique is to thread them all the way up the line using a worm threader. When floating them off the bottom it is best to use a worm blower so they can float up. Drop shotting from the boat works well when putting the weight on the bottom and "bouncing" off the bottom as you drift.
Pete Leash finally caught a whopper too, his trout weighed 5 Pounds even and he captured it by the dam on PB. Little Jordan Ventioner of Orangevale camped with her grandparents and she caught her very own Rainbow trout trolling worms with her Papa. Josh Gibbons & Jeff Walters both had a hand in catching their 5 lb. 8 oz. Trout while trolling an Apex lure near the powerlines. Congratulations to Nick Savage on catching his 1st Fish off the dock on a worm. His big brother Tristan did great, he caught 2 Bass off the dock on worms.
Linda Cartwright of Elk Grove used Nightcrawlers near the bridge and brought up a 10 lb. 4 oz. CATFISH!!! Topwater lures did the trick for Dan who caught a 5 lb. BASS in ELMER'S COVE. Elmer's Cove produced a 5 lb. Catfish for Richard of Ione using Nightcrawlers for bait. Young Tyler of Petaluma could barely hold up his stringer which consisted of a "limit" of Rainbow Trout.
