Fishing Goes Off

6-11-2011
Bill Roecker

The way that fishing seems to go off over a 500-mile zone all at once is something I've always wondered about. How do they know at Alijos Rocks what the fish are doing at Catalina? But it happens, and it's happened again.

Bluefin and some albacore are biting very well for the third day, between 200 and 250 miles south. They are mixed year classes, weighing from 20 to over 70 pounds, and they're biting again this morning, noted Fisherman's Landing manager Paul Morris. Bigger ones are around. Yellowtail to 40 pounds and more are chewing jigs and bait on The Ridge and at the Cedros/Benitos/Sac Reef triangle. White seabass to 60 pounds are biting very well at Catalina Island and a few other spots. Barracuda and bass are biting for inshore anglers, all of this within a period of a couple of days.

Right now it looks like local tuna will go off next. There were reports this morning of bluefin seen on the Dumper. Few local boats are out there looking. They're fishing inside for yellowtail and bottomfish. If you've been waiting on the fish show to sign up for a three to six-day trip, better not wait too much longer. It sure looks like it's on!
