Wohlford Lake Staff
Last Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 9th.
Next Plant: 1,500 lbs of Rainbow Trout Wednesday March 23rd.
Water temperature: At surface 57.74 f., 10.73 D.O. @ 15' 54.68 f., 7.71 D.O.
Water level: Low level, private water craft are currently banned.
In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.
Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats* to seniors on Tuesdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month.*This rate applies to regular motor boat rentals, no Bass Boats, and no discounted ? day rate.
It has been a week of big fish with big trout and even bigger bass. Many large trout have been reported over the past two weeks due to a large number of lunkers being mixed in with the previous plant. The largest trout of the year, so far, was caught last week by David Tiller of Vista and weighed 11.50#s. Mr. Tiller's fish was caught on an inflated nightcrawler in Willow Cove. Fausto Barron of Escondido caught an 8.55# trout in Oakvale Cove using rainbow powerbai and a blue wambu. Joe Martinez of Oceanside caught a 7.80# trout at the West Buoys on a dropshot with a roboworm. The best location for trout has been the area just west of Senior Shoreline. The best baits have been powerbait and/or powerworms, greens or yellows are the most popular colors, or inflated nightcrawlers.
Large bass have been attacking swimbaits. Casey Sartori of Oceanside caught and released a 12.45# bass on Tuesday morning using a rainbow swimbait near Murphy's Rock. The bass like to lurk near rocky outcroppings and prefer to feed on small trout or crawdads, early in the season. The best bass fishing takes place in the mornings and late afternoons.
Each month Whopper Contest winners in 4 categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
