Wohlford Lake February Report

2-26-2011
Wohlford Lake Staff

In order to protect Wohlford from invasive exotic Quagga mussels, there is still a temporary ban on private water craft and equipment that could have been exposed to mussels. Restricted equipment includes private boats, canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders, anchors and other equipment that contacts the water.

Lake Wohlford is offering $20 all day motorboats to seniors on Tuesdays and to active military on the first and third Saturdays of each month. This rate applies to regular motor boat rentals, no Bass Boats, and no discounted  ? day rate.

Trout fishing was brisk over the past week, but should be slowed a bit by the rains when the water becomes muddied from the runoff. The largest trout of the past week belonged to Tong Nguyen of Escondido and weighed 10.80 lbs. Part of a twenty pound stringer of four, it was caught on a combination of green powerbait and a powerworm in Boat Dock Cove. Darryl Johnson of Escondido came in second with an 8.85 lb. Trout caught on green Gulp powerbait on Senior Shoreline. Other notable catches included: Mike G's 8.75# and Robert Farris's 12.40# stringer of four. The best locations for trout have been Boat Dock Cove and the area just west of Senior Shoreline. The best baits have been powerbait and/or powerworms, greens or yellows are the most popular colors, or inflated nightcrawlers.

Big Bass have been biting early this year. The Bass like to lurk near rocky outcroppings and like to feed on small trout, or crawdads.

Each month Whopper Contest winners in 4 categories are awarded a free fishing and boating permit. For further information on the contest or fishing conditions, please contact the Ranger Station at (760) 839-4346.
