Mazatlan Fishing Report

8-12-2010
Larry Edwards

Overall, Mazatlan had a very slow week for passengers and charters but on the brighter side, the Aries III, skippered by Captain Martin Raygoza, led the husband & wife team of Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Graham, (Kathryn, Alberta, Canada) to a 220 lb. yellowfin tuna trophy, the largest fish for the week. The fish ate a rigged trolling bait, (mullet) and took Mr. Graham a total of 75 minutes to land on 80 lb. test equipment. The offshore fishing for 9 days reflected 2 sailfish and the single 220 lb. yellowfin tuna. The inshore super panga action fared much better and reflected an average of 6 dorado per boat day as the overall catches for 5 days fished reflected 31 dorado, 5 pargo and 6 cochitos for their efforts. The inshore fishing was unquestionably offering sustained activity throughout the days and kept the anglers at a high interest level with the many opportunities for dorado catches.

Mazatlan Climate: Mostly cloudy days with some scattered T-storms and temps that ranged from 79 nights to 91 daytime highs and raised humidity levels.

Sea Conditions: Excellent water temps throughout the area and stable at 87 degrees. A greenish tint to the water out to about 20 miles, then bluing and clean with light surface breezes at 5-10 knots.

Best Fishing Area: The tuna was taken at 22 miles out to the southwest o the Marina El Cid. However, there was no confirmed fish concentrations in any of the areas.

Best Lure/Bait: All of the offshore fish were taken on rigged trolling baits.

Bait Supply: Both live and rigged baits were readily available throughout the week.
