FISHING TIPS

Great Fishing! Fishing was very good this week. Many quick limits of trout were taken in both boats and on the shoreline. The best spots were on the other side of the Lake, and near Jump Off Point. The bass bite is mostly small ones, the bite should pick up in about 2 weeks as spawning approaches. The catfish bite was great near Boulder Bay. The bluegill bite is slow. The water temperature is at 57 degrees.

EVENTS

Hours -During the month of February the gates to Lake Poway will open at 5:30 AM starting February 24, 2010. On Derby Days, March 6 and March 7, the gates will open at 6:00 AM.

Open Trout Derby - Mark your calendars! The 2010 Open Trout Derby at Lake Poway is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7, 2010. The Derby will run from 6:00 AM to sunset on Saturday and from 6:00 AM to 12 noon on Sunday. Prizes will be awarded for the largest trout overall and in three divisions (Men, Women and Youth). There will also be many raffle prizes. Derby tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youths for each day of the event. A Derby ticket must be purchased in order to fish on each day even if you do not choose to participate in the Derby. Note that you must also have a permit in addition to your derby ticket. 50 motorboats will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for Derby participants. A stock of 2,500 pounds of trout, including trophy size up to 15 pounds, will be stocked on Wednesday, March 3, 2010. Lake Poway will be closed to boating and fishing at 12:00 PM Wednesday and all day on Thursday, March 4, 2010 and all day on Friday, March 5, 2010 in preparation for the Derby.

Trout Fishing Classes - The City of Poway offers trout fishing classes for youngsters between the ages of 6 and 12. The classes are taught by Captain Ron Baker. Captain Ron teaches children how to become successful trout anglers and good sportsmen. The program provides kids with the basic skills on how to catch trout. Classes are taught on the shoreline, with one class in boats. Classes meet on Mondays at 3:30 p.m. at the Pavilion of Lake Poway. Rods are provided by Okuma Fishing Tackle Corporation. There is a material fee and you must register your child into the class. NOTICES

Fishing Requirements - A State of California Fishing License is no longer required to fish at Lake Poway. Each angler is allowed to use a maximum of two rods. The trout limit is now 4 trout.

Adults (anyone 16 years of age and older) require only a City of Poway Adult Fishing permit to fish at Lake Poway. Youths between the ages of 8 and 15 years of age only require a Youth Fishing permit. Youths under the age of 8 only require a Youth Fishing permit when their accompanying adult is not fishing. All permits can be purchased at the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle. You must carry your permit with you at all times.

Quagga Mussels -The Quagga mussel is not in Lake Poway. It is known that there are Quagga mussels in other lakes. In order to protect the integrity of the Lake Poway water system the following temporary restrictions are now in effect. Until further notice, the following items are prohibited at Lake Poway:

 ? Float tubes

 ? Private motors and anchors

 ? Live Bait Containers

 ? Fish Finders

 ? Floating Catch Baskets

 ? Live Bait (shiners, crawdads, etc) from any source other than the Lake Poway Concession

 ? Any other items, determined by Staff, to be potential contaminants


No Smoking at Lake Poway -Smoking is prohibited on Lake Poway, in the park and on the trails. Smoking is only permitted in the designated smoking area that is located on the Northeast side of the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle building.
