Fish Report for 9-27-2024
The Truckee is kicking out quality fish!
9-27-2024
Trout Creek Outfitters
The Truckee has been increasingly kicking out more quality fish daily. While we would love to see a bit more of the drizzly, overcast weather typical of this time of year, the fish are still very much on the chew and the 80-degree days expected all week will sure be nice for the fisher, while keeping the bite consistent. You can even still comfortably wet wade during that mid-day through early afternoon window!
This last week we saw our first few October Caddis moving around in the upper river, and changing your dry dropper set up from a grasshopper to a size 8-10 orange stimulator will be another option on your top fly. Although flows remain low anywhere upstream of the Boca confluence, the numbers of fish are still good and dry droppers will be a great way to fish near Truckee. If fishing down below the confluence, the flows are holding at a near average 475 CFS, and the typical indicator or tightline nymphing methods will be most effective. We have seen the crawdad bite taper off and have been doing better on size 10-12 stonefly nymphs such as brown Pat’s rubberlegs, brown poxy back stones, or a brown rocksteady stone for the tight line game. Small and flashy nymphs imitating small mayflies have been fishing well and 16-18 rainbow warriors, Infernogons, Picky eater perdigons, and Quilldigons have been putting fish in the net. Egg patterns will also get it done this time of year. The fish remain holding in fast water for this time of year as water temps are still reaching 62 degrees mid day, so look to target riffles and pocket water for the time being. The best fishing right now is during the warmer points of the day, so sleep in, make a nice breakfast and fish hard through the afternoon.
