Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

9-20-2024
Trout Creek Outfitters

The water temps have plummeted on the Truckee this week. just 5 days ago, on September 15th, we were seeing temperatures peak at 62 around Farad, as of today they’re hitting just above 56. At the Sparks, NV gauge, temps are reaching 58 degrees mid-day. With the prime flows anywhere below the Boca confluence and the drop in temps, this tells us that we are looking at some excellent fishing over the next few weeks as conditions align.

This week, we didn’t see much variance in where we found our fish, or at least the bigger ones, as they are still looking for fast water. Sometimes we found them in the tops of buckets and sometimes in riffles, but the only fish we were finding in the slower water were the juveniles. Although if streamer fishing you very well may dredge up that one big resident in the frog water right now. *cough* Sculpins… *cough* Crawdads..

When fishing under the indicator this week, we did well on size 10-12 Pat’s rubber legs paired with a baetis nymph such as a size 16 juju baetis or size 18 micro may. Flashy attractor nypmhs such as rainbow warriors, perdigons, jigged CDC pheasant tails, and picky eater perdigons where also putting fish in the net. With the first bit of fall rain this week, worms will undoubtedly be on the menu as well. The bite window appears to be mid-morning, through mid-day right now, quieting down in the evenings, but that could change as the weather turns back to sunny this weekend.
