Little Truckee River Fishing Report & Forecast

9-20-2024
Trout Creek Outfitters

Not much in changes on the Little Truckee this week as the flows remain low and the dry fly bite spotty. Although we haven’t heard firsthand, we can only imagine there was a significant increase in activity during the stormy days last week as is typical with this fishery. The worse the weather, the fewer the fisherman, and often the better the fishing.

As we see sunny days in the forecast this week, expect to have some highly technical fishing using size 20-22 BWO’s and midges. Like the main river, we’d expect the worm bite to pick up out here after the rain, as well as the egg bite as we head into fall. The tough part will be presenting these flies during the current low flows of 60 CFS coupled with a significant amount of algae remaining on the river bottom, resulting in the constant cleaning of your flies.

This is where dry dropper fishing or using unweighted nymphs under a small white, clear or yarn indicator can really shine. As we quickly approach the spawning season for the brown trout out here, we ask that if you fish out here over the next month or two, to proceed with caution and make sure to watch your step when wading in riffles or tail outs. As always, if you ever have questions about how to identify a redd or good etiquette when fishing during spawning season, please don’t hesitate to call the shop or ask during your next visit. We are always happy to explain!
